WHAT IS IPL?

If the presence of dark spots or sun damage has caused you to feel insecure with the appearance of your skin, Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa is pleased to offer advanced and effective IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy for patients who qualify for the treatment. An IPL photofacial is a skin rejuvenation service designed to help women and men with hyperpigmentation (such as dark spots, sun damage, etc.) on their neck and face. IPL is a noninvasive procedure that is incredibly safe, efficient, and produces stunning outcomes for many individuals. Using the state-of-the-art Cynosure Icon, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Tamburrino sends intense wavelengths of light that raise the temperature of the skin cells just high enough to initiate the natural healing process and increase collagen production. As the added nutrients take effect, you should see a healthier layer with an improved tone and fewer pigmentation irregularities.

WHO CAN GET IPL?

An IPL photofacial reaches deep within the layers of your skin to target a range of complexion issues (especially sun spots and brown lesions) with minimal or no post-treatment downtime. The best candidates for an IPL photofacial at Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa are those who have a combination of concerns with their complexion, including sun damage, rosacea, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, large pores, flushing, freckles, melasma, age and sun spots, or dilated capillaries. Dr. Tamburrino will examine your complexion and help you to determine if you could benefit from IPL treatments during your private consultation.

What are the benefits of IPL?

An IPL photofacial can manage a wide range of cosmetic concerns without resorting to invasive procedures or plastic surgery. Patients choose to work with Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa for IPL therapy because of the many advantages it offers, including:

  • Safe treatment: IPL is a carefully controlled process that does not cause any necessary pain or scarring.
  • Natural-looking outcomes: Instead of looking "done" or "worked on," an IPL photofacial can give you a refreshed and natural glow.
  • No downtime: You will not need to take a significant amount of time off from work or social activities for an IPL photofacial.

HOW DOES IPL WORK?

A photofacial is completed at our Doylestown, PA office in about 20 – 30 minutes in one of our private treatment rooms. To start the process, a member of our team will wash and dry the skin to be treated before covering your eyes with shields. An IPL photofacial with the Cynosure Icon is performed using a handheld wand that passes over the skin while emitting pulses of laser energy. Although most patients will feel some discomfort during the IPL, it's generally tolerable given the short treatment time.

What to Expect

There is no downtime associated with an IPL photofacial, but you may leave your appointment with your skin a little inflamed and red. This will subside naturally in about a day, but you can cover the discoloration with cosmetics if you wish. Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa will advise you to apply an ointment to the skin to decrease irritation and promote healing. It also helps to use an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine to ease swelling as you recover.

Over the next 2 – 5 days, the sun damage and other irregularities under the skin will rise to the surface skin layers and then begin to flake away. It's important to protect your skin from the sun at all times and to not pick at your skin after an IPL photofacial. While you should notice some visible improvements after your first session, your skin will attain its best results after several photofacial treatments. Dr. Tamburrino typically recommends 3 – 6 sessions performed every four weeks to achieve ideal results.

IPL FAQ

How much does IPL cost?
Your complexion issues are unique, which means the cost of IPL will be dependent on your goals. Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa sometimes offers special deals, and we take most payment methods. During your initial consultation, we can help estimate costs and recommend how many sessions are needed to fit your needs and goals.

How quick are the results from IPL?
Visible improvements can be seen after your IPL treatment, but the best results develop around one month after a full series of treatments is completed. It’s common for you to get varying results after every treatment. You will notice fading of blotchiness, redness, sun spots, and age spots over time.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?
It's common to have mild, temporary side effects, like swelling, redness, crusting, bruising, or superficial blisters. This should go away on its own within a day or two after the procedure. Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun and excessive sun exposure will negatively impact the results of the procedure. We also recommend using sunscreen to protect your skin and avoid damage, like redness and spots.

Why should I get multiple IPL sessions?
We recommend getting a series of IPL to provide gradual, natural-looking improvements to the appearance of your complexion. Every treatment will fade spots and other surface irregularities. Multiple treatments also produce longer-lasting improvements.
