WHAT IS Microdermabrasion?
When you run your hands over your face, does your complexion feel smooth and soft or rough, like sandpaper? If your skin feels rough, this could be because the outer layer is cluttered with dead and damaged skin cells, making your complexion appear dull and uneven. At Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa in Doylestown, PA, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Tamburrino offers a range of cosmetic services, including noninvasive skin resurfacing with microdermabrasion. Effective and fast, microdermabrasion removes the outer layer of dead skin cells so your complexion is healthier and brighter. This procedure can be performed alone or with a complementary cosmetic treatment, like a dermal filler or chemical peel, for more dramatic improvements. At your initial consultation, Dr. Tamburrino will develop an individualized treatment plan for your specific skin concerns and cosmetic goals.

WHAT IS DERMABRASION?
Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa also offers dermabrasion for patients seeking skin rejuvenation. Dermabrasion is more invasive than microdermabrasion as it involves the removal of the outermost layer of skin with a special device. Most patients will require local or general anesthesia, and the treatment can take anywhere from half an hour to two hours to complete. Dermabrasion may be considered for women and men who have more significant skin issues. Because dermabrasion is more invasive than microdermabrasion, it produces more dramatic results and requires a longer recovery time.

who gets microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion may minimize the appearance of surface skin blemishes, such as uneven texture, dull skin tone, fine lines, sun damage, clogged pores, and scars. It's safe and effective for people of all skin types and tones who desire clearer, healthier skin. These treatments are usually performed on the face, but it can also be great for your neck, chest, and hands. This procedure should not be done on skin that has an open wound. You may not be a candidate for microdermabrasion if you have a chronic skin condition, such as rosacea or acne.
how does it work?
Microdermabrasion is performed in our office after your one-on-one consultation with a member of our team. During the treatment, you will be asked to lie back in a comfortable chair as your skin is cleaned and prepared. The handpiece will pass over your skin as the tool both polishes and sucks up the dead skin and crystals. While the treatment may feel a little rough, it not considered uncomfortable so you shouldn't need a numbing cream or local anesthesia. The microdermabrasion will be performed, evenly covering the treatment areas with extra care and sensitivity being taken around the eyes. Once the process is over, the skin will be cleaned to remove any leftover debris. Finally, we will apply a moisturizer with SPF that is selected for your skin's needs.
What to Expect
After your treatment, you can continue your normal routine as long as you apply sunscreen or another form of sun protection since your skin will be susceptible to sun damage. Your face should feel smoother, and your tone should be brighter and more even. To prolong the benefits of your treatment, Dr. Tamburrino suggests scheduling microdermabrasion procedures once every 4 – 6 weeks. Many Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa patients feel that after microdermabrasion, their skin care products (particularly creams and lotions) absorb more easily into the skin and produce more effective results.

How much does microdermabrasion cost?
The overall price of microdermabrasion can be discussed in your first appointment at Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa. After you explain your wants and examine your complexion, your personal treatment plan can be created. We often have specials on treatments, including microdermabrasion, as well as discounted packages if you buy several sessions.
Should I get microdermabrasion, dermabrasion, or a chemical peel?
Based on your skin and goals, a skin care technician will help you determine if microdermabrasion, dermabrasion, or a chemical peel is the best treatment. In a nutshell, microdermabrasion clears away the top layer of dead and damaged skin cells — so your complexion is smooth and healthier. You can get these same results from a light chemical peel. A stronger chemical peel or dermabrasion can help if your skin problems are deeper. The amount of time you want to spend in recovery might also help you decide which procedure you prefer because microdermabrasion causes minimal downtime.
How often should I get microdermabrasion treatments?
Initially, you may need 5 – 12 microdermabrasion treatments scheduled about 2 – 4 weeks apart to see your best results. After that, you may move to treatments every 4 – 8 weeks to maintain your healthy complexion. During your initial consultation, your technician can create a plan with recommendations specific to your needs that details how often you should schedule appointments for microdermabrasio
Can I combine microdermabrasion with other treatments?
You may consider combining microdermabrasion with another procedure since it is a surface skin treatment. Many patients combine microdermabrasion along with a facial or injectable wrinkle treatment, like BOTOX®. You should be honest about your skin concerns in your consultation so your technician is able to develop a plan that meets all your cosmetic goals.
