What is Microneedling?
When home skin treatments aren't effective, but you don't want surgery, learn more about minimally invasive procedures for skin rejuvenation, such as microneedling. Dr. Joseph F. Tamburrino and his skilled aesthetic team are happy to offer microneedling with SkinPen® technology (also known as collagen induction therapy) at our office in Doylestown, PA. Microneedling uses many fine-gauge needles to effectively and safely create micro-injuries in the needed areas of the skin. The micro-injuries prompt the natural production of elastin and collagen, two nutrients that increase the overall health and appearance of your complexion. Microneedling may help minimize scars, pores, and stretch marks. Schedule a consultation at Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa to hear more about the results of microneedling and ways to customize your procedure for your skin needs and goals.

What Are The Benefits of Microneedling?
At Tamburrino Plastic Surgery & Med Spa, we provide microneedling with SkinPen for patients who wish to gain several different benefits:
- Diminished aesthetic of loose skin, lines, and signs of aging
- Better feel and tone of skin
- Reduction of scar tissue, pigmentation concerns, or stretch marks

Who is a Candidate for microneedling?
You could benefit from microneedling treatments if you experience light or mild skin issues, like rough skin texture or low elasticity. Microneedling with SkinPen treatments may also minimize the look of scars, stretch marks, and pores. You must be willing to wait a while before seeing benefits from your microneedling treatment since the collagen and elastin require time to have an effect on the complexion, but you will develop natural-looking results and gain healthier and stronger skin.
How does Microneedling work?
Collagen induction therapy with microneedling is completed in one of our office procedure rooms in about 30 – 60 minutes with numbing cream or local anesthesia if requested, but patients generally feel mild or no pain and discomfort. The areas of skin being treated will be cleansed before the handpiece is passed evenly over. After the microneedling is performed, a topical treatment or a vitamin-infused serum may be applied so the nutrients can penetrate deeper into the skin. A moisturizer will be massaged in along with sunscreen since the treated skin will be more sensitive after the treatment.
What can I Expect after microneedling?
After your treatment, you may develop slight swelling and redness for around one day, but this should resolve naturally. It can take about 1 – 2 months as the collagen and elastin supply increases before you notice visible changes in the health and appearance of your complexion. You should plan to get about 4 – 6 follow-up sessions every 4 – 6 weeks for optimal results and long-term skin health.
Microneedling FAQ
What exactly is microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a nonsurgical procedure to rejuvenate your skin. Collagen is a fibrous protein that helps keep your skin supple, smooth, and firm. As you get older, your natural supply of collagen is depleted, and your skin becomes less elastic and thin. Microneedling creates small wounds in your skin. These micro-injuries prompt your skin to increase its collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. Once healed, your complexion is firmer, brighter, and healthier.
How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Most patients get 3 – 6 sessions to achieve their best results. Although, the number of treatments you need will vary based on your goals and the condition of your skin. Microneedling can be safely performed every 4 – 6 weeks as needed. In your initial consultation, our team will be able to estimate the number of treatments you will need after assessing your skin and listening to your goals. Once you have reached your goal, we suggest scheduling touch-up sessions about twice a year.
Is microneedling safe for everyone?
For the most part, microneedling is appropriate for all skin tones and types. Since the skin injuries created are so small, there are usually no side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be applied to most skin areas, including the face, neck, arms, chest, thighs, and calves. Microneedling isn't recommended if you have been on Accutane in the last few months, plus if you have an open wound, active skin infection, or herpes simplex. In addition, you may not be a candidate for microneedling if you're pregnant, nursing, or undergoing radiation therapy.
